Chess is a board game and a mental sport for two players. It is played on a square board of 8 rows (called ranks) and 8 columns (called files), giving 64 squares of alternating colour, light and dark, with each player having a light square at his bottom right when facing the board. Each player begins the game with 16 pieces that each move and capture other pieces on the board in a unique way.
Chinese Chess / XiangqiChinese Chess / Xiangqi
The most played chess in the world is Xiangqi or Chinese chess. It has been said that western chess is a war but Xiangqi is a battle! An extremely popular game in the Eastern Hemisphere, it is currently played by millions (or tens of millions) in China, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong and other Asian countries. Xiangqi has remained in its present form for centuries. It is believed that both Xiangqi and Orthodox Chess derive from the original Indian game of Chanturanga.
Japanese Chess / ShogiJapanese Chess / Shogi
Japanese Chess or Shogi, is played on a 9x9 uncheckered board; each player begining with one King, one Rook, one Bishop, two Gold Generals, two Silver Generals, two Knights, two Lances and nine Pawns. Sometime in the 10th to 12th centuries, 'chess' crossed the channel to Japan where it spawned a number of interesting variants. One of these was called 'Small Shogi'. Eventually, Small Shogi (though it went through many forms) won out over the larger variants and is now referred to simply as 'Shogi'. It is certain that Shogi in its present form was played in Japan as early as the 16th century
