In Shogi or
Japanese Chess almost every piece can advance in power if it reaches
the opponents three last rows and captured pieces can come back
onto the board by the capturing player instead of a move. Because
of this the game can last longer then a normal Chess game as the
board generally stays fairly crowded.
Shogi (Japanese
Chess) is played on a 9x9 uncheckered board. Each player begins
with one King, one Rook, one Bishop, two Gold Generals, two Silver
Generals, two Knights, two Lances and nine Pawns. Four black dots
are shown on the board to delineate promotion zones (those squares
lying on the last three ranks). Unlike Orthodox Chess, all Shogi
(Japanese Chess) pieces are exactly the same color. Loyalties
are determined by their directional headings.
We sell a
number of Japanese Chess Sets both with traditional Japanese characacters
