MahJong is
a game played with tiles, which are similar in function to playing
cards. The object is similar to rummy, as players attempt to collect
sets and sequences; but in MahJong values of winning hands can
vary wildly.
Mahjong: other
common English spellings include mahjongg, majiang, and hyphenated
forms such as mah-jong or mah-jongg. Mahjong is a gambling game
for four players that originated in China. The Chinese word Mahjong
literally means "hemp general". In Cantonese an alternate
writing, is more common (the same kanji are used in Japanese).
In Cantonese this literally means "sparrow" and is pronounced
"ma4 jeuk3", while in Japanese it means "hemp sparrow",
and is pronounced ma-jan.
Although descended
from ancient Chinese games, MahJong in its current form is only
about 100 years old. There are three main systems of rules these
being Chinese, Japanese, and American as well as variations within
each rule system for Mahjong. The game is for four players, and
there are no partnerships. Mahjong is a classic game.
