In Shogi almost
every piece can advance in power if it reaches the opponents three
last rows and captured Shogi pieces can come back onto the board
by the capturing player instead of a move. Because of this the
game of Shogi can last longer then a normal Chess game as the
board generally stays fairly crowded.
Shogi is played
on a 9x9 uncheckered board. Each player begins the game of Shogi
with one King, one Rook, one Bishop, two Gold Generals, two Silver
Generals, two Knights, two Lances and nine Pawns. Four black dots
are shown on the Shogi board to delineate promotion zones (those
squares lying on the last three ranks). Unlike Orthodox Chess,
all Shogi pieces are exactly the same color.
With the release of western style Shogi sets, Shogi is becomming
popular outside Japan and we have many sets available both traditional
Shogi sets and weternised Shogi sets, with reversable pieces.
If you enjoy playing Chess why not have a go at Shogi or even
Xiangi (Chinese Chess).
