In Shogi almost
every piece can advance in power if it reaches the opponents three
last rows and captured pieces can come back onto the board by
the capturing player instead of a move. Because of this the game
can last longer then a normal Chess game as the board generally
stays fairly crowded - easy to play, hard to master.
Shogi (Japanese
Chess) is played on a 9x9 uncheckered board. Each player begins
with one King, one Rook, one Bishop, two Gold Generals, two Silver
Generals, two Knights, two Lances and nine Pawns. Four black dots
are shown on the board to delineate promotion zones (those squares
lying on the last three ranks), and pieces able to promote are
tuned over to reveal their new movement. Unlike orthodox Chess,
all Shogi (Japanese Chess) pieces are exactly the same color.
Loyalties are determined by their directional headings, which
is indicated by a point at the end of the piece.
